More Than One Kind of Support

Support that starts with the person, not the service

Having an NDIS plan does not mean everyone needs the same services. One person may need assistance getting ready each morning, while another wants to build confidence travelling independently or joining community activities.

The starting point should be what matters to you: your preferences, daily life, existing supports and the outcomes you want to achieve.

Below are the additional support areas you can enquire about through DANS. We will discuss what may be appropriate and whether DANS can provide the requested support.

Support Area 01

Supported Living & Personal Care

Assistance with daily routines, personal care and supported living arrangements, guided by each participant’s needs, preferences and circumstances.

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Support with everyday tasks and routines for people who need assistance living in a shared or individual home setting. The focus is on daily living support, developing skills and maintaining personal choice.

May include Daily routines, personal support, shared living assistance and building household independence.

Personal Activities

Individual assistance with personal tasks that form part of everyday life, delivered in a way that respects privacy, dignity and the participant’s preferred routine.

May include Dressing, bathing, grooming, mealtime assistance and other personal routines.

High Intensity Daily Personal Activities

Some participants require more complex daily personal support associated with significant health or disability-related needs. These supports require appropriate assessment, staff competencies, training and clinical oversight where relevant.

Important Availability depends on the specific support need, staffing capability and applicable NDIS requirements.
Support Area 02

Support Area 03

Nursing & Household Support

Practical support for health-related needs and managing the everyday tasks involved in maintaining a comfortable home environment.

Community Nursing

Assessment required Scope, eligibility, clinical requirements and service availability must be confirmed.

Household Tasks

Assistance with household activities where disability-related needs make it difficult to complete tasks independently. Support should reflect personal circumstances and an individual’s NDIS goals.

May include Cleaning, laundry, basic household routines and maintaining an organised home.

Home Modifications

Home modifications may help improve accessibility, safety and independence. These supports generally require appropriate assessment and may involve specialist recommendations, quotes and NDIS approval processes.

Enquiry and referral DANS can discuss the request and confirm whether it can assist or direct you to a suitable service pathway.
Support Area 04

Employment, Transitions & Access

Common Questions

Questions about other NDIS supports

Can I receive more than one type of NDIS support?

Potentially, yes. An NDIS participant may use different supports depending on their individual plan, funding arrangements, goals and eligibility. Having multiple support needs does not automatically mean every requested service will be funded.

Does DANS provide every support listed here?

These are support areas about which you can enquire. Current delivery availability may differ by service type, location, staffing, professional requirements and DANS registration scope. We will confirm whether DANS can provide the requested service before discussing arrangements.

Do I need to be receiving PBS services to enquire?

No. You can enquire about other supports without first accessing Positive Behaviour Support. We will consider the particular service request and advise on next steps.

How do I know whether my NDIS plan covers a support?

The answer depends on the type of support, how your plan is structured and whether the support meets applicable NDIS funding rules. Your support coordinator, plan manager or the NDIA may be able to clarify funding. DANS can discuss the requested service, but does not determine NDIS funding eligibility.

Can a support coordinator send a referral?

Yes. Support coordinators can submit an enquiry or referral on behalf of a participant with appropriate authority and consent. Please include the support requested, relevant circumstances and preferred contact details.

Are home modifications the same as Supported Independent Living?

No. Home modifications generally relate to changes to the physical home environment, while Supported Independent Living concerns assistance with daily living tasks and routines. They are different types of NDIS support with different funding and assessment requirements.
